What is insurance fraud?

Insurance fraud happens when someone intentionally provides false, incomplete or misleading information related to an insurance transaction. This can include fraud involving: insurance applications, claims, premiums and policy transactions.

Fraud Costs Us All

Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime. It increases costs for consumers through higher insurance premiums, whether it be your home, auto or personal lines.

Examples of Claims or Application Fraud

Fraud can occur in many ways, including:

  • Intentionally omitting or falsifying information on an insurance application

  • Submitting a false claim

  • Changing or fabricating medical documentation or other claim documentation

  • Intentionally providing false information about a claimant

  • Intentionally omitting, falsifying or misrepresenting any transaction concerning an insurance policy

  • Other improper, irregular or suspicious actions

Examples of Insurance Producer Fraud

Producers (agents) can also commit fraud. Examples include:

  • Intentionally omitting or falsifying information on a client’s insurance application

  • Mishandling customer or Company funds, including failure to exercise fiduciary responsibility

  • Forging or altering insurance applications or Company forms

  • Other improper, irregular or suspicious actions
